ishmael bacchus(gabriel bas yeager)
Memory is all we are. Moments and feelings, captured in amber, strung on filaments of reason. Take a man’s memories and you take all of him. Chip away a memory at a time and you destroy him as surely as if you hammered nail after nail through his skull.

BIOGRAPHY

Ishmael Bacchus is the self-chosen alias of a political prisoner of the Eorzean alliance- one of many captured soldiers serving under Nael van Darnus at the Battle of Carteneau. Being one of many survivors once Bahamut's flames subsided, he was ushered to Ul'dah for medical treatment. Upon waking from a short coma, he found himself unable to remember anything about himself: his past, his allegiances, or even his own name- which was not found anywhere on his person. It was clear by his uniform that he was a soldier for the Garlean Empire and thus, his claims of experiencing amnesia were first met with skepticism. However, after many days of interrogation and evaluation by chirurgeons, it was concluded that he spoke truth, and Ishmael was eventually freed on good behavior.

Ishmael survived in his new life much in the same way that people would characterize the ushering of a new Astral or Umbral Era: confused, struggling, and yet still moving forward. He quickly realized that he had considerable physical ability and comfort holding a sword- something to be expected of a former soldier. He got by doing odd jobs and adventurer work. He would soon discover that, along with his amnesia, he had another condition: the Echo.
He would not be able to put a name to this strange and frightening phenomenon until he met with the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, who eventually recognized his talents and his power and had him join their ranks for the good of Eorzea. Scions Urianger and Y'shtola made the educated guess that perhaps the fallout of Bahamut's wrath at Carteneau was the spark that gave him his gift. A gift that he found ironic, as it felt more like an exchange: his past for his future.

Throughout his story as the Warrior of Light, or as a supporting member of another's story, Ishmael would learn bits and pieces of his past from people who claim to know him. All of it, however, still feels just as artificial as his echo visions. His original self, Gabriel bas Yeager, feels more like a character in a story, or a distant past life than anything close to himself. He isn't sure how to feel about his parents when he eventually learns of them: a happily married Ala Mhigan woman and a popularis Garlean father with a successful merchant business in Garlean territory. The biggest lesson he learns from his travels and his divine quests to "save the world" is that nothing is as simple as it seems, and the line between friend and foe is often blurry...
